WORTHING & CHANCTONBURY GROUP - 'PROVINCIAL ANNUAL INCOMING PRESIDENTS DINNER'  - TUESDAY 19th MARCH 2019

This annual celebration of incoming Presidents was another glittering success. Chaired by Past Grand President Bro. Philip Gidman and attended by some forty Brothers and their wives, nine of our incoming Presidents attended. Entertainment was provided by Past Provincial President Bro. John Goulding who demonstrated his award winning 'folk-whistling'. Incoming President of Seaford Circle Bro. Jim Gregan gave a rendition of 'Danny Boy' loudly accompanied by all present. An excellent three course dinner was served. Arundel Circle won the 'Philip Gidman Membership Cup' for recruiting the highest number of new brothers in Province this past year - the outgoing President of Arundel Circle, Bro. John Crook graciously accepted the prize. Much drink was taken but all behaved respectably....  but promised to try harder to not do so next year.

J R R TOLKIEN…. fervent Catholic and possibly the FIRST CATENIAN SAINT!    His cause was begun on 2nd September at the OXFORD ORATORY. Crowdfunding has begun online to raise £4000 to aid his cause. This year has seen a special grace in the movement to Canonise J. R. R. Tolkien, with the first Mass being celebrated at the Oxford Oratory on the 2nd September 2018, calling for prayer for the cause for canonisation to be formally opened.

The first Mass marked the 45th anniversary of Tolkien’s death. The cause is under the guidance of Fr Daniele Pietro Ercoli, a Salesian priest from the Diocese of Treviso (but as a Salesian belonging to the religious province of Triveneto).

The 'Tolkien Canonisation Conference 2018', was held on the weekend of Saturday 1st to Sunday 2nd of September. The Conference aimed to provide a cultural dialogue to advocate for the sanctity of Tolkien’s personal life, as well as how this was mediated through his artistic works. As a fruit of the Conference the organisers hoped to discern the Spirit of this formal attempt to begin the official Canonisation process in the Roman Catholic Tradition by getting a postulator. They are already in contact with the Archbishop of Birmingham Bernard Longley, who has given backing to this opportunity to inform people about Tolkien's faith and how it affected his life and writings. Permission has also been granted allowing for a prayer for private devotion.

Tolkien's devout Roman Catholic faith was a significant factor in the conversion of C. S. Lewis from atheism to Christianity, although Tolkien was dismayed that Lewis chose to join the Church of England.

He once said, "It may be said that the chief purpose of life, for any one of us, is to increase according to our capacity our knowledge of God by all the means we have, and to be moved by it to praise and thank God.

According to his grandson Simon Tolkien, Tolkien in the last years of his life was disappointed by some of the liturgical reforms and changes implemented after the Second Vatican Council: "I vividly remember going to church with him in Bournemouth. He was a devout Roman Catholic and it was soon after the Church had changed the liturgy from Latin to English. My grandfather obviously didn't agree with this and made all the responses very loudly in Latin while the rest of the congregation answered in English. I found the whole experience quite excruciating, but my grandfather was oblivious. He simply had to do what he believed to be right."

MRS. JESUSA (Sue) EZOBI R.I.P. - HASTINGS & BEXHILL (66) CIRCLE

We were shocked and very saddened to learn of the death of Mrs. Jesusa Ezobi, wife of our Brother Solomon Ezobi and mother of Maria, following a severe stroke.
Sue's family and friends were devastated by their loss.
Funeral: the coffin was received into 'St Thomas of Canterbury & English Martyrs Church', Magdalen Road, St Leonards on Sea at 1630hrs.on Wednesday 19th September 2018. Sue's Funeral Mass commenced at 12 noon on Thursday 20th September 2018 and was well attended. The Burial followed at Hastings Cemetery at 1330hrs.
There was a reception at Bro. Solomon's house.

BROTHER GERRY MASON R.I.P. - EASTBOURNE CIRCLE -  Bro. Gerry died on the evening of Monday 17th September. He had been ill for some time.  Gerry had been a member of Eastbourne Circle since 1970. He was President in 1976/77 and had been Secretary of the Circle and Provincial Councillor.

Bro. Gerry's funeral took place at 10.00 Tuesday 9th October at St Gregory's Church, Victoria Drive, Eastbourne and was followed by a private interment in Hailsham. There was refreshments after the funeral at 'Chalk Farm Hotel', Willingdon.

HASTINGS & BEXHILL CIRCLE have just ordered 1000 of these A5 double sided ‘PRAY THE ROSARY WITH THE CATENIANS’ leaflets (A4 glossy heavy-weight stock, folded to A5). These will be distributed FOC around our local Churches. On the inside, a handy guide to praying the rosary. The rear cover provides promotional information about the Catenians in Hastings & Bexhill. Front cover has an attractive image of a rosary in use. Our Provincial Marketing Officer experimented with similar leaflets a few months ago with some success so this seems like a sensible promotional investment.

BRIGHTON REGENCY (17) CIRCLE has just ordered SUSSEX CATENIANS name-badges for ALL their brothers and wives and widows. That means we will soon have well over 300 of these badges out and in use giving our Province a significantly 'joined up' look and perhaps an improved feeling of belonging.

'WHO ARE THE CATENIANS?' VIDEO ADVERT SUCCESSFUL!

Our Video, by far the most successful & popular promotional item we have ever had, has been updated. Having been circulated around the world and posted to dozens of online sites and 'versioned' for other Provinces, it was last used for just a couple of days as a 'paid-for' social media advert targeting:

• Catholic men between 40-65 in 11 chosen areas of Sussex . The advert ‘reached’ (was seen by…) - 923 Facebook viewers.

• The advert pointed the viewer towards our video. Those who opened and viewed our Video (so far) -  463 -  79% of these (366) have watched the video for its full 5mins 47secs. ('Repeat views’ i.e. from the same IP address, are NOT counted in these figures).

BROTHER PETER SAVILLE R.I.P. - WORTHING GROUP
Sad news from Worthing Group reporting the death of Bro. Peter who died on 27th June. Peter had been a Catenian for sixty four years, joining the Catenians in 1954. Always friendly and affable, Bro. Peter celebrated his 90th birthday in May 2018. He was President in 1962-1963 of what then was still 'Worthing Circle No.133' and again in 2000-2001. He will be very much missed by all his friends. Rest in Peace Brother Peter.
UPDATE...
FUNERAL MASS FOR BROTHER PETER SAVILLE - WORTHING & CHANCTONBURY GROUP… The funeral Mass for Brother Peter Saville will take place at 12 noon on Thursday 12th July 2018 at St. Mary of the Angels Church, Richmond Road, Worthing, BN11 1RQ.
Brothers are reminded that the church is in central Worthing and that parking can be tricky. Street parking is controlled by Pay & Display with maximum stay of 1 or 2 hours depending on location (pay with coins); a complication is that some parking bays are restricted to use by residents only between certain hours, so do take time to read the signs carefully.
There are long-term surface/multi-storey car parks available within reasonable walking distance ( pay by coins or credit card ).
The website adur/worthing.gov./uk gives full details of parking availability. (Details provided by Bro. Peter Beirne)

'THE TIMIOS ALTERNATE BENNY O'SHEA GOLF CLASSIC'

The annual 'Alternate Benny O'Shea Golf Classic' was played on Thursday 7th June. A comprehensive report and photos of this wonderful event is provided below by Brother Peter Frisby of Crawley Circle.

"Dear Friends

At Ifield Golf & Country Club Crawley on Thursday last 7th June, the Brothers of Crawley Catenian Circle were joined by Catenians from the Province and beyond together with other interested friends from far and wide. We were raising funds for The Timios Trust, an ecumenical Christian Charity offering bursaries to young people going abroad to work for needy causes. You can find more about the trust by visiting their website: www.timiostrust.com.

The day was rather overcast with a chilly wind but otherwise great golfing weather. The course was as usual for our events in almost perfect condition. The scoring was not particularly high but all participants expressed their enjoyment and after all that is the purpose, that we spend an enjoyable day raising money for a deserving charity. Other supporters joined us after the golf for the conviviality, lunch, prize giving and our famous raffle where everyone gets a prize!

The prestigious Alternate Benny O’Shea golf Classic trophy was won this time by Peter Evans one of our most regular supporters. Mark Gidman was second & Bob Sparks third. John Myall won the nearest the pin competition & Adam Burt had the longest drive. The two ladies played so well and as they achieved the same score both were awarded a prize.

Our famous raffle this year raised £340. which is amazing. Donations from those present for the golf and lunch and from those unable to attend who never the less sent a donation or raffle prize enabled us to achieve the grand sum of £1050. & there may be more to come! A cheque for the cash raised will be presented to David & Helen Skipp the founders of the Timios Trust on Sunday 1st July.

Manus & I would like to thank all those involved for their help and considerable generosity in raising this significant figure for a most worthy charity.

We look forward to seeing you again for this year’s “Foley Niblick” which will be held at Rookwood Golf Club in Horsham on Thursday 6th September. Please note this date in your diary, we want you there.

Peter"

THE GOLD STANDARD.... OUR NEW YEAR'S RESOLUTION
We are trying very hard to make our online presence the 'Gold Standard' of Catenian Association Provinces. Our resolution this year is to use imaginatively, ALL the technology available to us plus original material to help raise and maintain the interest across our communities in what we SUSSEX CATENIANS are and what we do.
We want to be visible to Catholic men and their families as we support our parishes and young people. In this, we want to be the Province that others may measure themselves by. Therefore, if you have something to add, an idea, a news item, a criticism or just a comment to make, please email marketing@sussexcatenians.org.uk or use the form on our Contact webpage.
We seek a consultative, useful, working engagement with ALL our brothers and their respective Circles and Groups, our parishes and our communities. We support a lot of other Catenian Circles outside our Province through our 'Connected Catenians' initiative and will continue to do so.

THERE IS SUCH A VARIETY OF MATERIAL BEING USED TO PROMOTE CATENIANS IN SUSSEX

So many of our Churches have websites and social media. We are reaching out to many of them and posting informational items and promotional items online. We are doing this too in Universities and Schools....

WE COULD DO WITH A SPOT OF SUPPORT PLEASE....

Our 'YouTube' channel.... offers us a unique 'URL' making our videos so much easier to find online. However, we need 100 subscribers - please click on the image below or the link above and visit us.... and do subscribe. It costs nothing but does alert you when we post new material online. Thank you.

The funeral is likely to be held early in the new year.

MR PETER ROBINSON - PAST BROTHER OF HASTINGS (66) CIRCLE AND GRAND KNIGHT OF COUNCIL 630, KNIGHTS OF ST. COLUMBA

Peter Robinson was a Brother of Hastings Catenian Circle at least twice. He was also the Choirmaster at St Leonards for many years. He was living in Eastbourne.  He died on the morning of 29th November following a heart attack. Peter and his wife Lizzy had just returned from Ireland the previous weekend.

David Giles of the Knights of St. Columba arranged for a Mass to celebrate Peter's life (on Saturday 30th December at 10.00 am). Another Mass was arranged by family & friends for Peter at St. Mary's on Wednesday 19th December at 10.00.

MR JIM FITZPATRICK R.I.P. - PAST BROTHER OF EAST GRINSTEAD CIRCLE

Afterwards, family and close friends attended Surrey & Sussex Crematorium at 1:30pm. Following this, everybody was invited for refreshments at Heathy Farm, Balcombe Road, Crawley, RH10 3NQ - opposite the crematorium.

Only the family provided flowers by request -  but there was an opportunity to donate in support of St Catherine’s Hospice and The British Heart Foundation.

NEW SUSSEX CATENIANS PROVINCIAL EVENT - THE FIRST ‘BARRY JORDAN TROPHY - ‘TOAD IN THE HOLE’ - COMPETITION’. TUESDAY 28th NOVEMBER, 2017
It was a truly brilliant night that begins a new annual SUSSEX CATENIANS Provincial event.... Very well deserved ’CONGRATULATIONS!’ to team ‘Crawley 2’, especially Alan Rew - and Lucy Forster who landed 4 out of 4 Toads on her final throw, in the hard fought final!
Particular commiserations to ’Brighton Regency 17’ who won 4 of their 5 preliminary rounds to get into the Final but weren't able to carry their form through to the end.... and also to Hastings - who didn't quite make it into the Final Round on ‘the countdown rule’ - but won the ‘Plate competition’ instead,.... well done!
Many thanks to Mike Newman for his scoring, and Iris Jordan for presenting the ‘Barry Jordan Trophy’.

THE TEMPERATURES ARE FALLING... HELP WANTED...
There are quite a few homelessness shelters in Sussex. This is because there are quite a few homeless people

Let us not judge why - the homeless charities know why.
The question is “How can we help?”... this winter. It is fast becoming the busiest time of year for all homeless shelters when resources are most stretched - the coldest nights.

Brighton has ‘The Clocktower Sanctuary’;’Emmaus’ has several sites in Sussex - check their website; in Chichester, ‘St Richards’ has the ‘Stone Pillow Project’; Hastings has ‘Snowflake’; Worthing has ‘St Clare’s’ and the ‘Homeless Persons Project’; Horsham has ‘The Ark’ trying to deal with the problems of many homeless people that can cause homelessness. There are many more caring organisations in East & West Sussex. They all need help - money and resources including volunteers. If you are unsure if there is a caring body in your area that will accept whatever you can offer, email: cold-nights@sussexcatenians.org.uk  with your contact details and town/region and we will try to provide you with contact details of an organisation near you that needs YOUR help.

Please help if you can.

ARUNDEL & CRAWLEY CIRCLES recently enjoyed a tour of Nutburne Vineyards, near Pulborough - http://www.nutbournevineyards.com. We are told they had a truly excellent 'value for money' day out… and the wine tasting was terrific and is possibly one reason why several have booked in for the last week of July and the first week of August next year….! Here they are barricaded into a nearby Windmill and refusing to come down until someone opens another bottle...

The money was raised at the 'Timios Trust Alternate Benny O'Shea Golf Classic' played at Ifield Golf & Country Club on 7th June 2018. This magnificent sum was welcomed by the Trust and marks the considerable generosity of the players and sponsors of this year’s ‘Alternate Benny O’Shea Golf Classic’. It will be put to good use.

Bro. Peter, on behalf of himself and Bro.Manus McDermott (both of Crawley Circle), thanked everyone for their kindness in supporting this very good cause.

BROTHER MICHAEL O'NEIL OF CHICHESTER CIRCLE - PROVIDES THE HISTORY OF THE 'GBNC PRESIDENT'S CHAIN OF OFFICE'
In 'CATENA' (Feb 2018 edition), Brother Michael O'Neil is rightly credited with providing GBNC President Peter Rogers with the provenance of his Chain of Office. Brother Mike has an extraordinary recall of the history of our brotherhood and fascinating anecdotes of people, events and artefacts with which to illustrate it. Long may he continue to reel these out. Well done Brother Mike!

'CATENIANS 2018' ...

....is the collective heading we are using to name the initiatives being assembled to aid our Marketing & Membership Officers at all Circles and Groups throughout Province 18, as well as to raise our profile within the community. A few of these, and the new visual items available, are shown on this webpage or on our Marketing webpage.

'CONNECTED CATENIANS' INITIATIVE LAUNCHES IN OUR PROVINCE

With the take up just before Christmas of our offer to assist other Catenian Circles with the development of a unique Circle logo and the requests from many to use some of our Marketing material or to assist with Banners and similar - a new initiative is born. In the same way that we have styled our Marketing materials for a Province wide use in Sussex, the 40+ Circles outside Province now using our materials can show that they have been authorised so to do and indeed, have been assisted by us, simply by displaying the 'Connected Catenians' strapline in their posters, leaflets and online presence. It is another way for all of us to show solidarity with each other and it displays to outsiders that our brotherhood is mutually supportive.

AN ENTIRE NEW SUITE OF CIRCLE AND PROVINCE MARKETING MATERIALS - AVAILABLE FROM JANUARY 2018

The entire 'SUSSEX CATENIANS' Province-wide range of Marketing materials is being updated... cards, leaflets, posters, adverts, hand-outs, online materials.... a comprehensive catalogue will be distributed to each of our Circles & Groups from January 2018.... many items are completely FREE... Below is our current advert as displayed on social media. 'Click' on it to visit our Marketing webpage...

BROTHER DON WITHEY R.I.P. - EASTBOURNE CIRCLE

We  heard with immense sadness of the death of our brother Don Withey. He passed away in his sleep at the nursing home on Monday 4th December. Brother Don’s wife Pam asks for our prayers for him - and we respectfully offer to her and their family our prayers and thoughts. Rest in peace brother Don.

The funeral arrangements for Brother Don are as follows:

Requiem Mass was held at Our Lady of Ransom, Wednesday 20th December at 1pm.  The family then went to the Crematorium. Refreshments were available after the Mass in OLR Hall and all Catenians and ladies were welcomed by the fsamily at the Mass and afterwards in the hall.

BROTHER TREVOR WILTSHIRE RIP - SEAFORD CIRCLE

It was with great regret we heard of the death of our Brother Trevor Wiltshire of Seaford Circle. He died at around lunchtime, Friday 24th November in Eastbourne General Hospital. His wife Mary and daughter Alison were with him at the time.

Trevor had been admitted to Eastbourne General Hospital after collapsing at home. He had been diagnosed recently with a form of fibrosis and consequently, from time to time, Brother Trevor struggled with his breathing. He developed pneumonia. His condition was thought to be improving but it then worsened and became untreatable.

Brother Trevor's funeral details were as follows:

Thursday December 14th. @ 10-30am.

St. Thomas More 54 Sutton Road, Seaford  BN25 1SS

NO DISRESPECT TO ‘CATENA’ ....

...but there are a number of good reasons we have a Province wide ‘ Obituaries’ webpage.... not least because we update it in real time with details of funeral arrangements, family wishes, parking, etc., and on occasion, car sharing to and from funerals.

We have established a Province wide Obituary webpage that allows several photos of the deceased to be used that Circles or the bereaved families wish to have published. These are welcomed along with details that celebrate the lives of those we lose, ..... and of course in addition we publish PERMANENTLY the Obituaries provided to ‘Catena’.

Remember too, that ‘Catena’ DOES NOT publish obituaries of Catenian wives or widows. Our Obituary webpage does. Here’s SIX GOOD REASONS we have a SUSSEX CATENIANS OBITUARY WEBPAGE.... http://www.sussexcatenians.org.uk/members1/obituaries

'SUSSEX CATENIANS - PROVINCE 18' - OVERWHELMED BUT NOT SURPRISED BY THE TAKE UP OF THE SUSSEX CATENIANS' GRAPHICS AND LITERATURE...

Clearly, a need has been identified. Since May 2017 when we badged our Circles and Groups in East & West Sussex 'SUSSEX CATENIANS' and launched this website and our accompanying Social Media (see links below), our new logo(s) and graphics have proven popular. Even our 'Catenian Association' and its GBNC  Marketing & Membership Work Groups have taken up quite a few of our graphics and adapted these for wider distribution. Unfortunately, some adaptations have not been of the best quality... so our Province 18 has magnanimously adapted a significant quantity of our graphics and have made these comprehensively available for print or screen. To gain access to the graphical library and receive your link, please email marketing@sussexcatenians.org.uk.

There are several Provinces and Circles in the UK and elsewhere that have received and are using Sussex Catenian material - this includes our leaflets, posters and other printed Marketing items. Some asked for and received customised versions badged for their local use. We are happy to help if we can.

MRS APRIL WELLER  RIP - BRIGHTON REGENCY CIRCLE

We very much regret hearing of the death of April Weller who sadly passed away on  6th September 2017 in Royal Sussex County Hospital. Her death followed a complication arising after the amputation of a leg. She was the wife of Brother Leslie Weller who himself recently suffered a stroke.

April, Brother Leslie and their family are in our prayers.

MRS JENNY DUDER-RUMSEY RIP - EASTBOURNE CIRCLE

Jenny Duder-Rumsey sadly and unexpectedly passed away on the evening of the 7th September 2017 in Eastbourne District General Hospital and is mourned by all who knew her.

She was been receiving treatment for pneumonia and had been in good spirits. Unexpectedly, her health suddenly deteriorated from about 21.15.

We offer our prayers for Jenny and our support for Brother Dominic and family.

BROTHER MIKE DAVIES RIP - WORTHING & CHANCTONBURY GROUP

We are much saddened to hear of the death of Brother Mike Davies.

Brother Mike joined the Catenians in June 1967 and the presentation of his '50 year scroll' was planned to be made after an expected recovery from his recent illness. Our deepest sympathies are with his wife Wendy, his family and friends.

Please remember Brother Mike and his family in your prayers.

Please remember Brother Brian and his family in your prayers.

'FIND A WAY OR MAKE A WAY'

AS BROTHER PROVINCIAL PRESIDENT MIKE NEWMAN BEGINS A CRUSADE AROUND PROVINCE TO RAISE A WAR-CHEST FOR RECRUITMENT, INDIVIDUAL BROTHERS ARE MAKING PERSONAL DONATIONS....

We are delighted  that this vital fund is being supported. At a time when our membership loss-v-gains runs at the rate of 4:1 in the past year, it is vital that we add to our numbers. Tapping on the shoulder after Mass is excellent.... but it is no longer anything like enough on its own to fill our gaps. So Brother Mike is committed to driving forward our more businesslike recruitment aims and getting these funded. Radical times need radical measures; "FIND A WAY OR MAKE A WAY!" is the tag-line ..... and we thank our anonymous brother for his personal gift of £100 and the two members of Provincial Council who have provided more that £500 between them so far.... other brothers have donated too but it is now time for our Circles & Groups to consider how they too can support these central aims to support ALL in Province....

SUSSEX CATENIANS CHARITY OFFICERS -

We are compiling a new page for our website detailing each of the charities and good causes your Circles, Groups, Province and Societies supported last year and the amounts raised .... as well as giving a write-up to those being supported this year.

We have some detais in already but do keep sending your photos and text articles for inclusion. This is YOUR CHANCE to publicise across Province and to our thousands of monthly viewers what we do for good causes.... please send to marketing@sussexcatenians.org.uk or use the form on the website....

OVER 100 MORE 'SUSSEX CATENIAN'  BADGES WERE ORDERED ON 19th JULY.

This is the third order we have placed as more and more Catenians, their wives, Circles & Groups move to the SUSSEX CATENIANS banner. It certainly looks like our Province is presenting a unified face - so much easier for recruitment and the raising of our collective profile....

STAY UP TO DATE - WITH THE UPDATES THAT GET ADDED TO THE CATENIAN ASSOCIATION'S WEBSITE - If you are a Circle or Group Secretary you may sometimes find that there has been an update to a procedure or a form... or indeed anything else, that is Catenian and you didn't know...

We have a clever bit of software at Province that alerts us to important updates as and when they happen on the Catenian Association's website. Some of Sussex Catenians Circle or Group Secretaries and others subscribe to a list that automatically lets them know of these changes. So, never be caught out again. Add your name to the list by using the form on our Contact us page or email marketing@sussexcatenians.org.uk and say "Updates'...

£32,000 FOR CHARITY....

We keep hearing of more and more fund-raising for charities and good causes by Catenians, their Circles or Groups, Province and by Societies like our golfers etc. We now know that last year the total raised by SUSSEX CATENIANS through Presidents' Charities, Societies, Province and by individuals EXCEEDED £32,000..... This IN ADDITION to funds donated to Vocations, and our Bursary & Benevolent Funds...

‪CATENIANS - RECRUITMENT - Our Catholic Golf poster seems to be attracting interest. 3 golfing telphone enquirers in a week who hadn't heard of the Catenians‬.... visit http://www.sussexcatenians.org.uk/members1/golf

SUSSEX CATENIANS - PROVINCE 18 - GOLF SOCIETY now has its own webpage. Find it at http://www.sussexcatenians.org.uk/golfsociety

For more details contact the Sussex Catenians Provincial Marketing Officer: marketing@sussexcatenians.org.uk or use the Contact form on our website...

STOP PRESS.... 'Marketing' now has its own page on this website. to view materials visit...

SUSSEX CATENIANS - FACEBOOK GROUPS

We are now hosting FOUR Sussex Catenians Closed Groups on our Facebook page.

One is for the benefit of ALL our Catenians Brothers across Province 18. The second is for our Catenian Circle MARKETING Officers. The third is for our Catenian Circle MEMBERSHIP Officers. Finally, the fourth is for our Catenian Circle VOCATIONAL Officers. These closed Sussex Catenian groups exist to allow interaction between those doing similar jobs in different Circles and to allow communication, support and resource sharing. THE BAD NEWS - although these have been  pre-established, it is unlikely their use will be much taken up before the autumn and following the general introduction and use of our newer Cateniansupport material and video resources....
